Frequently Asked Questions

What if I want to establish or work on my existing native prairie?

The Gottfried Prairie & Arboretum does not give guidance on maintaining privately owned prairies at this time.

Here are some resources you may use:

Why aren't all the dead trees in the prairie being removed?

These dead trees are called snag trees. They are viewed as a benefit to the eco-system by providing habitat to cavity dwelling creatures and wood boring birds as well as elevated perches for migratory or overwintering birds. They are not a risk to humans as they are in remote areas or are a sufficient distance away from walking trails and biking paths. Just watch how many birds land on these trees!

Are dogs allowed in the Prairie & Arboretum?

We are dog friendly on the trails and mowed areas. Please pick up after your dog and keep your dog on a leash. Dogs are not allowed in the prairie area itself. The prairie is an active nesting ground for wildlife.
